However, from the latter part of the 14th century a number of estates developed around Wood Green. This included the Manor of Ducketts and a handful of smaller estates. In the early Seventeenth Century, the lord of Tottenham Manor, the Earl of Dorset , conducted a major survey of his land. It showed that Wood Green, at the time roughly the Western half of Tottenham , had only sixteen houses and 50 inhabitants. It is Grade II listed. Winding through the area, the river looped across Chitts Hill and then passed along the northern side of Wood Green Common before turning south. Later, Wood Green House c. Was the LMS too big? Frederic Stansfield In his reply to my earlier letter about the size of the LMS September issue , Doug Landau November issue makes many interesting points describing the company’s engineering innovations. But two of Landau’s examples show how engineering developments within the LMS were subordinated to business issues.

Wood Green is a suburban district of North London, England, in the London Borough of London Plan identifies it as one of the metropolitan centres in Greater London.. The Best Tube Lines in London (and the Worst)

With the rise of local boy Blair to the threshold of power, Islington is being portrayed by the media as the new hothouse of power politics – and on an afternoon like this, it felt like it. But with a couple of kicks on the pedals I was away into a different Islington: I headed east along the towpath, past the elegant Victorian town houses, with their white window shutters and wrought-iron balconies, and the tumbling greenery of their back gardens sloping down to the water.

Below, an array of boats, ranging from the rust-bucket to the potplant-adorned picturesque, lay moored beneath branches hanging heavy with the end of summer.

Deciding where to live in London can be quite a headache for tenants, as there are Inner London areas to choose from as well as many more Outer London and commutable home county areas.

They’ll also be installing lifts down to the tube platforms. The tube station is buried underneath the railway viaduct, so the only access is via narrow passageways that open directly onto the street, with no ticket halls to speak of. A year or two ago they added a new canopy on the east side which will allow the entrances there to be gated without making people queue in the rain. The small Wells Terrace ticket hall will be extended slightly to fit in two tiny gatelines, and the tunnel from Seven Sisters Road will have its gateline positioned deep inside the station, where there’s a wider part.

The top end of the lifts will be in a reopened passageway off the National Rail entrance behind the braille station map in the first photo and the blue area on the diagram. The passageway will be extended so that it doubles as a shortcut from the Wells Terrace entrance to the tube platforms, though you’ll need to either use the lifts or go up to the National Rail subway on the right in the photo before going down the spiral interchange staircases.

It’s not clear whether the National Rail entrance will be signposted as a tube entrance via a similar route, but it’d certainly reduce pressure on the tube gateline next door.

The line crossed open countryside and ran on the surface, apart from a short tunnel north of Hendon Central. Five new stations were built to pavilion-style designs by Stanley Heaps , head of the Underground’s Architects Office, stimulating the rapid northward expansion of suburban developments in the following years. The line then runs under the wide station forecourt and public road outside the station, to the depot.

The extension was initially planned to continue to Sutton [5] over part of the route for the unbuilt Wimbledon and Sutton Railway , in which the UERL held a stake, but agreements were made with the Southern Railway to end the extension at Morden.

Etymology[ edit ] Islington was originally named by the Saxons Giseldone , then Gislandune The name later mutated to Isledon, which remained in use well into the 17th century when the modern form arose. Now the rear entrance to the Business Design Centre Cattle show at the Royal Agricultural Hall Some roads on the edge of the area, including Essex Road, were known as streets by the medieval period, possibly indicating a Roman origin, but little physical evidence remains.

What is known is that the Great North Road from Aldersgate came into use in the 14th century, connecting with a new turnpike toll road up Highgate Hill. This was along the line of modern Upper Street, with a toll gate at The Angel defining the extent of the village. The Back Road, the modern Liverpool Road , was primarily a drovers’ road where cattle would be rested before the final leg of their journey to Smithfield.

Having lived as a lad in Canonbury Avenue and attended Canonbury School next door, I well remember the Highbury Corner roundabout being built in , at the spot where a doodlebug fell in June What a waste of money it was, 50 years ago, to re-route the trolleybus overhead wiring and equipment for routes , and around the new roundabout, when all would be gone by late Regarding the bendy buses, yes, they should be got rid of as soon as possible, encouraging as they do the dishonest to travel without paying.

But a new Routemaster? Surely that is a fantasy, especially in the present economic climate. Why cannot our mayors that includes Ken Livingstone too promote the reintroduction of trolleybuses instead of backing expensive tram systems?

[page xi] PREFACE. 1. The report which follows is the distillation of more than two years’ enquiry and discussion. The relevant law, the history of school government, and the development in recent years of a bewildering variety of practice and opinion combine to make our study a complex one.

History[ edit ] The current station derives from two earlier stations. The first, which was on the same site, was an impressive Victorian – gothic building, designed by Edwin Henry Horne, with a drive-in forecourt, built in as Islington by the North London Railway NLR. This line and stations were operated by the Metropolitan Railway and its successors from until when the line, by then called the Northern City Line, was transferred to British Rail.

The route is now operated by Great Northern. The NLR station was damaged by a V-1 flying bomb on 27 June ; however, its main building remained in use until it was demolished in the s during the building of the Victoria line. The original westbound platform buildings remain, as does a small part of the original entrance to the left of the present station entrance. Today’s single-storey structure was built in the s for the opening of the Victoria line on 1 September and is the entrance for all lines.

Its disused entrance remains and was refurbished externally in — it houses signalling equipment for the Victoria line. This service operated from until To allow new four-car trains to run on the London Overground network, the North London Line between Gospel Oak and Stratford was closed between February and May while a new signalling system was installed and 30 platforms were extended.
